Brendan Returns From ‘Camp Cayman’!

Many would have noticed our incredible therapist, movement coach and Olympian Brendan Cole had been away over the past 3 months.

He was infact in the Cayman Islands with an international group of sprint and hurdle athletes united in their pursuit of peak performance for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers. The Camp was dedicated to full-time training in which the athletes could balance track workouts at Cayman National Stadium with strength and flexibility sessions under the mentorship of renowned coach Stuart McMillan (ALTS) and our own therapist Brendan Cole.

We catch with Brendan on his experience after working with this elite sprint team in the Caymans.

Welcome back to Byron!  Can you tell us a bit about what you were
doing in the Caymen Islands and how things went?

It’s great to be back! I was in Grand Cayman working with a small group of elite sprinters and hurdlers who are getting ready for an big Olympic year. ‘Camp Cayman’ as we called it, was a really special meeting of world class athletes, coaches, therapists at one of the most beautiful places in the world. It was supported by one of the nicest hotels in the Caribbean – Palm Heights. My role was support for the athletes. Often this was through my therapy skills, but it would spill over into coaching on the track and in the gym, and helping manage the group. We also hosted 6 expert therapists to come down and work with the athletes, and we filmed them and talked to them about their process and knowledge. It was a very busy 3 months!

Has anything from your experience working with these elite athletes again inspired you for new ideas coming back to the Byron
Shire?

Absolutely. Watching some of the best therapists in the world, and working with 3 of the best coaches in the world allowed me to refine my own knowledge whilst expanding it to new ideas. I think the biggest light that has illuminated my work is in the fascial performance area. Myofascia is the complex and completely fascinating system of connective tissue throughout our body. We use to think it was just like ‘cling wrap’ around muscles; giving it shape. But the extent that this tissue impacts performance, pain, coordination and overall health of a person in mind blowing. Not only working through fascia on the table, but also engaging in the fascial system with movement and training is the next step in the evolution of high level treatment. I can’t wait to share some of this with my clients at Evolve!

What else are you most excited about being back in Byron?
There is truly nothing like the beach and water here. It’s so nice to be home! My happiest place is helping people move and live in their bodies better. I am really excited about doing more of that here in Byron.
