To help you get to know Dan better we have asked him a few introductory questions — read on to learn more about his journey and what inspires him in physiotherapy.
Tell us a bit about your background, where you’re from, your professional journey and the journey that led you to Byron Bay?
I'm from Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, although I have Chinese ancestry.
I was a multi-sport athlete growing up which led me down a path of endless fun, but also resulted in a plethora of injuries. Physiotherapy helped me recover, and peaked my interest as a career option. In Uni, I first studied Kinesiology with a concentration in health, fitness and human nutrition, whilst simultaneously working as a personal trainer. I loved working in fitness, however I often encountered clients with injuries, and this inspired me to continue my studies. In 2016, I completed a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy from Western University. Since then, I have developed my skills primarily in orthopedic and sports physiotherapy clinics.
I first visited Australia in 2014, and briefly stayed in Byron Bay. The vibe really stood out to me, particularly the culture around surfing and music. I had a feeling that I would return some day.
What are you passionate about in Physiotherapy?
I simply love being able to use my energy for the greater good of humanity. Physiotherapy is an amazing vessel to do this because I get to combine my knowledge of injury rehabilitation, fitness, and general health and wellness. I enjoy educating people about their bodies, so that they can understand the root cause of the problem, and understand how to create balance in their system. From a treatment perspective, I provide a unique blend of therapeutic exercise, soft tissue release, manual therapy, and functional dry needling.
I understand we all have busy lives, so it is important for me to collaborate with my patients to come up with a realistic plan of care. Ultimately, I want to be a guide for others to learn how to take care of themselves, because that is truly what creates long lasting results.
What are some activities you enjoy doing outside of work?
The primary reason I moved here is to surf. I grew up skateboarding, and snowboarding, and always dreamed of having an opportunity to progress my surfing abilities too. So, I plan on catching as many waves as possible! When not in the water, I maintain a balanced program of running, walking, yoga, and weight training. Plot twist: I am also a folk singer-songwriter, and you will find me busking in front of Main Beach and playing gigs around town.
Dan is available for bookings on Thursdays Mornings only at this stage.
